Before Little Lovely was around, every Friday evening was reserved for a movie date. Jody and I discovered we shared an interest in film early into our relationship. In fact, we stopped by Blockbuster after dinner on our first date to pick up a favorite romantic comedy, Serendipity (I’m dating myself here…).
Movies just like books have a way of transporting you – in a dark theater, you forget about the drudgeries of the day and are thrust into new worlds. It’s especially a treat this time of year when the fresh crop of fall films roll out in anticipation of award season.
We definitely watch more movies on demand when baby is down for the night these days, but here are a few flicks on our must-see list:
La La Land starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling is directed by Damien Chazelle of “Whiplash” fame. Set in modern day LA it is a tribute to the glamorous musicals of the 1950’s where the two stars follow their artistic dreams while falling in love. I’m particularly excited about the opening number, which sounds amazing.
Nocturnal Animals was a favorite at the Venice Film Festival. A stylish film noir by designer and director, Tom Ford, it stars Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. The two were married as young artists chasing their crafts, Amy an artist and Jake a writer. Amy receives a manuscript of Jake’s work, and the audience is taken on a ride as we read along with her about a tragic and violent incident that occurred long ago. Unsure of whether it is fiction or reality, it sounds like an intense thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Jackie starring one of my favorite actresses, Natalie Portman, is one I’ve been anticipating since I heard she was cast as the lead. Not only to watch her acclaimed performance as widowed Jackie in the aftermath of the notorious assassination but also to feast my eyes on her iconic costumes. The bio-drama offers a glimpse behind the gates of Camelot and into Jackie’s psyche as she balances public perception and private anguish.
This weekend Clint Eastwood’s Sully opens, and we are making plans to see it at the IMAX theater so we can better take in the sweeping action.
