When summer heat is at its worst, escaping to a higher elevation is a nice relief. We did exactly that this weekend and enjoyed a little time away in Highlands, NC, where the town slogan is “the height of happiness.” It delivers on that promise- from the charming downtown to the majestic mountain setting.
We stayed at Old Edwards Inn and Spa and highly recommend the hotel for its service and amenities. We were immediately impressed with the safety precautions that the hotel has undertaken during this time- limiting capacity, increasing cleaning and requiring masks worn by all guests. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a champagne cocktail and then settled into our cottage before heading to the pool. Being able to read quietly with a cocktail was a treat.
We had a delicious dinner at Paoletti’s, a classic Italian restaurant with a knowledgeable sommelier on Main Street. (Date night dress details linked in my LIKEtoKnow. It)
The Inn’s Hummingbird Lounge has live music most evenings, and we had a nightcap by the fireplace, which isn’t something you get to do in July very often.
The area offers many hiking and nature experiences for all levels. We spent the morning exploring local waterfalls, including Bridal Veil and Dry Falls.
After grabbing coffee downtown at Calder’s and doing a little shopping (anyone else only shop for their children while away?), we set off for the spa. Between the tranquil sitting areas and café you could easily spend the whole day there.
A late, alfresco lunch at The Ugly Dog was the perfect way to end our mini getaway.
Thank you, Highlands, for the happy memories. We will be back! Where’s your favorite spot for a lovely little getaway?
